About NERv

NERv was co-founded by two University of Waterloo Engineering graduates who were determined to see that no patient loses their life because of an undetected post-operative complication. Our growing team of engineers and surgeons is committed to achieving that goal by developing sensors and predictive models to detect complications at their onset. Post-operative recovery can be a stressful period and we aim to improve outcomes.

The NERv Family

Youssef Helwa

MASC Electrical Engineering
Chief Executive Officer

Youssef is the CEO and one of NERv founders. Youssef has led the development and growth of NERv throughout his Nanotechnology Engineering degree, implementing its novel approaches in improving the clinical workflow for both patients and physicians. Coming from a medical family himself allowed him to live the most common challenges seen across many patient journeys. Youssef pursued his Masters in the field of implantable biochips while running NERv as a startup. The research work helped establish the foundation of NERv's first product. His focus remains on building systems and products that integrate seamlessly with existing medical products and procedures, while improving patient outcomes and growing NERv into a leading medical company.

Amr Abdelgawad

Master of Business, Entrepreneurship & Technology
Chief Operating Officer

Amr is a Nanotechnology Engineer by training and background. His passion for healthcare has pushed him towards joining NERv in order to provide better resources for physicians to make more informed decisions regarding their patients. Over the years, Amr has been able to develop his business acumen through the Master's of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology (MBET) program at the University of Waterloo and by leading the operations, finance, and business development activities at NERv. Amr is also the 2016 Ontario Student Entrepreneur of the Year, the 2016 runner-up Canada Student Entrepreneur of the Year, the 2017 Canada Student Entrepreneur of the Year, and a 2017 TEDxUW speaker. Outside of work, you will find him cheering on Real Madrid or playing soccer with his friends.

Mohamed Okasha

HBSC Biochemistry & Biomedical Sciences
Lead Scientist

Mohamed acts as NERv’s Lead Scientist and one of its Co-Founders. His primary responsibility is progressing NERv’s research and development while creating new sensors for NERv’s biomedical applications. Mohamed’s passion towards improving medicine and medical outcomes as a whole is what led him to pursue a career in medical related research as he believes this is where real change starts. He is a McMaster Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences graduate who joined NERv a year after its founding as the only scientist on the team at the time. Since then he has learned (not forcefully) some of the ways of the engineers while also working on developing several sensors while leading NERv’s development to create its first sensors. Mohamed is now pursuing a Masters of Science at the University of Waterloo in Chemistry and Nanotechnology hoping to acquire more experience and knowledge in the field that will enable him to create more novel sensing technologies (not because he found out he was the only person on the team with no affiliation to Waterloo).

Abdallah El-Falou

MASC Electrical Engineering
Chief Technology Officer

Abdallah is a techie at heart, having always been fascinated by technology old and new. Having combined backgrounds in biomedical and electrical engineering, his primary role is translating clinicians' needs into a full-fledged system. Before joining NERv, Abdallah fulfilled R&D roles in cutting-edge technologies including mobile touch controllers, high-speed satellite communications, and camera modules at leading institutions including the University of Waterloo and Apple. Outside of the office, you'll find him watching a musical, flexing his culinary skills, or catching up with world news.
